Boston Marathon Highlight: Barbara Lane
Georgetown, TX Resident Runs Boston Marathon for Youth Mentoring Programs
Barbara Lane To Hit the Pavement for Big Brothers Big Sisters
On April 21, Barbara Lane, a history professor from Georgetown, TX, will run the Boston Marathon to support youth mentoring programs. She will lace up to raise money and awareness for Big Brothers Big Sisters, a leading one-to-one mentoring program for youth.
Barbara is one of several runners supporting the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters this year. As an active Big herself, she is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of young people, not just through fundraising, but also through her own mentorship.
“Mentorship is just a form of guidance. It’s nice to have someone who has already journeyed where we want to go,” says Lane. “I’ve had strong role models show me that any destination can be reached, but it’s good to have a roadmap.”
Barbara has been a Big for two years, currently matched with a middle schooler in Tennessee, where she also has a home. “We love to go out to eat and talk about all kinds of things. She is a great person,” Barbara says warmly. Her commitment to mentorship was deeply influenced by her early life experiences, growing up as an Army brat and sharing a bed with her grandmother until the age of 17, who she describes as her biggest mentor.
Barbara discovered Big Brothers Big Sisters after her husband researched marathon-connected charities. Having already been affiliated with a chapter in Tennessee, she was excited to support the organization in a bigger way through the Boston Marathon.
This will be Barbara’s first Boston Marathon, but not her first time on the course, she has previously run three marathons, including the Houston Marathon, where she qualified for Boston. “I love running, but I also believe in giving back to organizations that build community,” she says. “Giving back matters. I’ve been so lucky in life in the multiple ways others have given to me, and it’s my absolute privilege to bring it full circle.”
Lane is one of seven Boston Marathon runners hitting the pavement and fundraising for Big Brothers Big Sisters this year. Her goal is to raise $20,000 and she’s hopeful to raise even more.
