A NOTE FROM OUR REGIONAL DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
Reflecting over the last year, we are reminded of how fortunate we are to have incredible donors like you, who were steadfast in your support throughout the pandemic. Because of you, we continue to provide youth across Eastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and the Islands with a caring, 1:1, professionally supported relationship with an adult mentor.
During the pandemic, you kept our foundation strong. For the second year in a row, you provided over $1M for our virtual Big Night. Without skipping a beat, you renewed your support for our in-person events when they returned in April, and introduced our mission to your friends, colleagues, and companies. Your gifts ensured our agency could continue our support of youth and families who were disproportionally impacted by the pandemic. You answered our call and helped match over 3,300 youth with caring adult mentors who will provide the help, guidance, and consistency they need now and into the future.
Thank you for ensuring our youth have access to our programs. I hope in the coming months, we have the opportunity to gather in support of our mission and celebrate our incredible community. On behalf of our Bigs, Littles, Families, and staff, thank you for your unwavering support of our agency.
Sincerely,
Sara Conahan
“We cannot express enough how much a Big in Jack’s life has changed his outlook and how grateful we are every day that his Big took the chance to volunteer and dedicate the time to change a kids life.” – Sara, Jack’s Mother
MATCH HIGHLIGHT: BIG BROTHER DAVID AND LITTLE BROTHER JACK
Big Brother David and Little Brother Jack have been matched for a year and a half. Jack, from Harwich, was enrolled in our program in hopes of finding an additional, positive, adult in his life at a time when he was struggling socially and emotionally. Jack’s mom wanted someone who was there “just for him”.
David, from West Dennis, signed up from hearing about our need for male volunteers. Working in land conservation, David & Jack instantly bonded over their shared love of the outdoors and nature. In between outings, they often text each other photos of wildlife picked up on their trail cameras or cool things they’ll find on different trails on the lower-cape.

“My favorite part was playing and meeting new people. My Big is nice, funny and we liked to talk about Anime. It changed me because it made me willing to meet new people and I don’t like to meet new people. It made me think about going to MMA.” – 4th Grade Little
PARTNER IMPACT
Since formalizing our partnership in 2014, Mass Maritime Academy has been a leader in our campus-based initiative to serve more youth, especially boys, in the towns of Bourne & Wareham. This program model partners with Bourne Elementary & Middle School as well as Wareham Elementary & Middle School for a weekly mentoring meeting on Mass Maritime Academy’s Campus.
For many of the youth we serve, this is their first experience in a college campus setting. When launching this initiative, we believed this would not only match them with a high caliber mentor, but also open their horizons to post-secondary education at a younger age.
EVENT HIGHLIGHT: BIG 3 FISHING TOURNAMENT
The 9th annual Big 3 Fishing Tournament, held on July 8, 2022, raised a record-setting $665,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands. This event is the agency’s largest fundraiser in the region. Since inception, the Big 3 Fishing Tournament has raised more than $3.15M, creating more than 1,110 new mentoring friendships for youth on the Cape and the Islands.
This would not be possible without the tireless dedication and commitment from the Big 3 tournament leadership committee: Tri-Chairs, Shawn DeLude, Jeff Leerink and John Our, and committee members, Jonas Baker, Courtney Bridge, Ben Crago, Chris Cooney, Chris Lynch, Jeff Perry and Kyle Prussing, and event founders E.J. and Terry Jaxtimer. Thank you!
We recognize the tremendous generosity from all our donors, sponsors, in-kind friends, and volunteers, whose support we celebrate and are most thankful for! We are indebted to all of you for your contributions that make a direct impact on the kids and families we serve.
This year’s tournament was sold out for weeks, capping attendance for Friday’s tournament reception at 240 guests, with 46 boats registered to fish. Nate Ludtke, 15 from Hyannis, was the reception’s mission speaker and gave a powerful testimony about the impact of his 6-year friendship with his Big Brother Paul Manganella from Bourne.
The biggest fish weighed in was a 15.4 lb. striped bass led by Bill Scratchard from Team Raider and a 12.2 lb. bluefish led by Seamus Muldoon from Team Jail Break. Honorable mention goes to Team Scup Slayer for their 15-point victory.
The Big 3 will celebrate its 10th anniversary tournament on Friday, July 7, 2023. If you are interested in learning more or being a part of the tournament leadership committee, please contact Christa Danilowicz at cdanilowicz@capebigs.org.
COMITTMENT 1,000
As a result of the pandemic, significant social, emotional, and educational losses will be felt for years. The structures and supports that once surrounded youth have receded, and we know the youth and families we serve have been disproportionately impacted.
As a dynamic, professionally supported 1:1 mentoring program that provides youth with specific outcomes, we believe that all youth should have the opportunity to reach their full potential and the benefit of a caring adult in their lives. To meet the need of our community, we are developing an equitable, durable, and inspiring strategic path forward that will support 1,000 youth.
Your enduring support will enable us to meet the needs of youth and families. Thank you for your continued support of our agency.
