A Year of Discovery, Growth, and Gratitude
A Year of Discovery, Growth, and Gratitude
By a Proud Big from Eastern Massachusetts
When I first signed up to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts, I
had no idea how transformative the experience would be—not just for my 11-year-old “Little,”
but for me as well.
Over the past year, we’ve shared countless moments of laughter, learning, and connection.
From the very first time we met, I knew this journey would open me up to new experiences—and
it certainly has.
Trying New Things (That I Now Love!)
One of the unexpected joys of mentoring has been discovering new interests through my Little. For instance, he introduced me to bubble tea. I hadn’t given it much thought before, but now I genuinely enjoy it—because he does. Another surprise? Soccer! His love for the game is
infectious. After hearing him win the finals for his soccer team, I was inspired to join a soccer league at my workplace. Who would’ve thought?
This is the magic of the Big-Little relationship: both sides grow, both explore, and both are changed.
Adventures Big and Small
Together, we’ve built robots during library visits, climbed rock walls at Boston University, and chased each other in epic laser tag matches. We’ve biked scenic trails—from the Saugus-Lynn trail to South Boston—and played everything from tennis to bounce dodgeball.
We’ve also shared simple, meaningful moments: baking apple crisp in the fall, carving pumpkins for Halloween, or watching him try lobster and cinnamon bread for the first time. Seeing his eyes light up during these experiences has been incredibly rewarding.
Lessons Beyond the Activities
This year has taught me more than just new hobbies. It’s been a lesson in patience and mindfulness—of being present, slowing down, and appreciating the little things. Spending time with my Little helps me stay grounded and reminds me to step outside the hustle of adult life. It’s a break from thinking about work, politics, or even AI. It’s just about being there—for someone who needs you.
A Heartfelt Thanks
To Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts—thank you. You’ve given me the opportunity to be a mentor, a friend, and a learner all at once. I’ve gained far more than I could’ve imagined when I first joined, and I hope others are inspired to take this step too. Whether you’re 10 or 50, the journey of mentorship is full of surprises—and it just might change your life.
Children s safety is our number one priority; throughout the duration of the match, not just the beginning!
