Happy Pride Month!

One great way to celebrate Pride Month is by exploring media highlighting the queer community and consuming media by queer creators. Also, keep an eye out for events near you such as parades and festivals that everyone can enjoy. To get you started, we’ve compiled a list of resources for easy access to books, movies, events, and organizations for Pride Month. Explore the links below to learn more! (As always, any events, media, and books should be age appropriate and approved by your Little’s guardian.)

  • Boston Public Library has LGBTQ+ booklists for every age!
  • BPL’s We Are Pride is a “list of books published in the previous year for all ages concerning the diverse experiences of the LGBTQ+ community.”
  • The New York Times shares relevant books for both kids and teens recommended by queer individuals!

For Kids

  • Check out We Are Teachers’ list of 30 recommended children’s books!
  • Ages 7–12 Books
    • “Melissa” by Alex GinoA transgender girl’s journey to be seen for who she truly is.
    • “The Best at It” by Maulik Pancholy – A gay Indian-American boy navigating middle school and identity.
    • “Zenobia July” by Lisa Bunker – A trans girl and tech whiz solving a mystery at her new school.
    • “Rick” by Alex Gino – A young boy questions his feelings and learns about asexuality.
    • “Too Bright to See” by Kyle Lukoff – A ghost story and a coming-out journey for a transgender boy.
    • “Star Crossed” by Barbara Dee – A Shakespeare-loving girl develops a crush on another girl during the school play.
  • Ages 7-12 Movies
    • “Out” (Pixar SparkShort on Disney+) – A short animated film about a young man coming out to his parents—with a magical twist.
    • “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” (Netflix) – Features a casually queer teen girl protagonist in a fun family adventure.
    • “Luca” (Disney+) – While not explicitly LGBTQ+, many viewers relate to its themes of identity, otherness, and friendship as a queer metaphor.

For Teens

  • Haverhill Public Library offers multiple lists of LGBTQ+ young adult novels. Explore the genres below!
  • Ages 13-18 Books
    • “Felix Ever After” by Kacen Callender – A Black, transgender teen navigates love, revenge, and identity at art school.
    • “Cemetery Boys” by Aiden Thomas – A trans boy summons a ghost in this magical Latinx love story.
    • “You Should See Me in a Crown” by Leah Johnson – A queer Black girl runs for prom queen and finds love.
    • “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” by Benjamin Alire Sáenz – A poetic story of friendship and first love between two Mexican-American boys.
    • “I Kissed Shara Wheeler” by Casey McQuiston – A Southern mystery-romance about identity, queerness, and self-discovery.
  • Ages 13-18 Movies
    • “Heartstopper” (Netflix series) – A sweet and affirming British teen romance between two boys navigating high school.
    • “Love, Simon” (Hulu/Disney+) – A gay teen’s coming out journey, friendships, and first love.
    • “The Half of It” (Netflix) – A quiet, queer love triangle between a girl and her crush’s crush.

Movies/Television

Events

It may be toward the end of Pride month, but that doesn’t mean we have to stop celebrating the LGBTQ+ community! Check out these upcoming pride events this summer:

  • Boston Black Pride Parade & Arts Festival
    → July 6, 2025, 10 AM–8 PM at Shattuck Grove Picnic Area in Boston. Celebrate Black LGBTQ+ joy, arts, and culture with a full-day parade and festival tbf.org+6aclum.org+6thefabryk.com+6.
  • Trans Resistance Festival
    → July 19, 2025, 12 PM–5 PM at Harambee Park, Boston. Centered on trans+ activism, community, and celebration aclum.org.
  • Provincetown Family Week
    → July 26 – August 2, 2025: A well-loved annual gathering for LGBTQ+ families, with programming for all ages and community-building activities
  • Worcester Pride
    → August 23–30, 2025: A week-long celebration culminating in a parade and festival in Worcester. Regional Pride for Central MA
  • TQNC (Trans & Queer Neighborhood Council of Boston) Events
