Boston Marathon Highlight: Stephen Lansing
South Boston Resident Runs Boston Marathon for Youth Mentoring Programs
Stephen Lansing To Hit the Pavement for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts
Every April, thousands gather to take on one of the most iconic races in the world, the Boston Marathon. Among them, this year is South Boston resident Stephen Lansing, who’s running for something much bigger than just the race.
Stephen is lacing up to raise funds and awareness for Big Brothers Big Sisters, a leading organization focused on creating one-to-one mentorship opportunities for youth. As one of seven runners representing the organization this year, Stephen’s goal is to raise $10,000 to support life-changing mentorship programs.
His motivation? Six years of firsthand experience as a dedicated Big.
“I am a proud Big for the past 6 years and cannot get enough of helping this incredible organization in every way that I can,” says Stephen. “Giving back matters. I have been so lucky in my life in the multiple ways that others have given back to me, and it is my absolute privilege to bring it full circle and help others in any way that I can.”
Stephen has been matched with his Little, TJ, since before the pandemic. Their friendship began over countless virtual games of Uno, a simple yet powerful way to stay connected and build trust during uncertain times. What started as virtual bonding grew into a lasting relationship rooted in laughter, consistency, and support.
Stephen’s commitment to mentorship was inspired by someone close to home: his older brother.
“Mike was incredibly kind, and that really set the tone for me on how to treat others,” he reflects. “This tone is something that I absolutely try to carry with me in everything that I do today.”
Earlier this year, Big Brothers Big Sisters merged with the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston to broaden its reach and make mentorship more accessible across the region. With over 600 local children still waiting to be matched with mentors, Stephen’s marathon journey is more than symbolic, it’s a step toward a future where every child has someone in their corner.
