Position: Chief Development Officer
Location: Boston, MA
Hours per week: Full-Time (40 hrs. p/week)

As the nation’s largest mentoring agency, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts (BBBSEM) is committed to promoting the healthy development of children through the nurturing of continuing, one-to-one friendships with caring responsible adults, supported by trained professional staff. To further our mission, over the past few years we have partnered with schools in the Boston area to bring our program and services closest to youth who need them. This role is a critical part of making sure people know about and have a chance to participate in our programs.

General Statement of Duties

10+ years of development experience, with a proven track record of front-line major gift success, including the ability to establish high-level relationships, cultivate and engage philanthropic leaders, and secure high-level gifts (6- and 7-figure)

Successful experience with the following:

  • managing a high level portfolio and an ability to make their portfolio a priority
  • focusing on major gifts as part of a comprehensive development department
  • best practices in managing fundraising systems
  • carrying out detailed campaigns and events aimed at increasing donor engagement and participation

Strong ability to:

  • develop, manage, inspire, and mentor a fully integrated development program (major gifts, special events, planned gifts, annual fund, operations)
  • be a strategic and tactical fundraising partner to the CEO and Board of Directors
  • partner with programs and internal operations to support organization-wide initiatives
  • develop and utilize budgets and performance metrics to drive superior performance; experience managing to a fundraising plan
  • coach, grow and develop staff

Excellent presentation, organizational, interpersonal, and writing skills

Major Duties

Mission Based Giving

  • Be the lead fundraiser/individual performer at the Agency
  • Leverage Board, donors and volunteers to strengthen networking and major gift fundraising
  • Build the Annual Fund and pipeline of annual donors
  • Build a Planned Giving program

Strategy

  • In partnership with the President and CEO, develop a fundraising strategy that identifies philanthropic opportunity, recommends investment in growth areas, and raises significantly greater resources
  • Contribute to and refine the case for philanthropic support
  • Prepare and execute revenue plans to meet Agency multi-year strategic plan funding needs.
  • Lead the Board of Advisors and Young Professionals volunteer groups
  • Work with CEO to staff and build the Board of Directors

Special Events

  • Oversee and assist solicitation special events team to achieve multi-million dollar annual event goal
  • Continuously build and/or refine event strategies and event committees

Development Operations

  • Oversee all development functions including major gifts, annual giving, corporate and foundations relations, donor recognition and stewardship, planned giving and special events
  • Build and develop an infrastructure of systems and practices to oversee program management and provide direction for protocols and effective reporting
  • Construct annual plans, timelines, performance benchmarks, and progress reports to guide development activities, achievements, and emerging opportunities
