Celebrating 75 years of service in 2024, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts (BBBSEM) has grown from an organization serving 10 fatherless boys in Boston into the largest one-to-one youth mentoring agency in New England. BBBSEM stands at its highest point today, as the second largest Big Brother Big Sister affiliate in the country. For the past 20 years, the agency’s program success is largely due to Natick resident Terrence McCarron.

McCarron has carried several Program Services roles during his tenure at BBBSEM until most recently becoming Chief Program Office (CPO). As CPO, McCarron is responsible for supporting team members across the marketing, community engagement and programming departments to ensure the nonprofit delivers high quality one-to-one mentoring programs and support for the youth, families, and volunteers it serves.

“Growing up, I was lucky enough to have the support of two brothers who informed most of my choices,” says McCarron. “I have always felt the value of having older siblings around when you need someone to be there for you. Not all children are lucky enough to have these built-in protectors or champions. That’s where the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts community comes in.”

Not only has McCarron dedicated over two decades of his career to BBBSEM, but he also walks his talk as a two-time volunteer mentor for the nonprofit. As a current Big Brother to Kevin, age 18, through the agency’s Big Futures high school mentoring program, he has seen firsthand the positive impact that BBBSEM’s programs have on youth especially as it relates to bridging divides in communities across the region.

This National Volunteer Month consider featuring McCarron as a local resident making a BIG impact in the lives of Massachusetts youth. He can tell you more about his experience working and volunteering for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts for nearly two decades and the value of mentoring he has learned along the way.

Matched in 2021, McCarron and his Little Brother Kevin first bonded over Zoom during the height of the pandemic and have enjoyed spending time at Kevin’s high school and in his community. The pair have a great relationship and intend to continue their mentoring friendship in BBBSEM’s Post-Secondary Program as Kevin is off to college this Fall.

“It’s an honor to spend my time defending the potential of youth,” says McCarron. “I love lifting up the mission of mentoring and investing in the power of community.”

Prior to joining the BBBSEM team, McCarron was a high school teacher. After transitioning to BBBSEM full time, he continued to work in the field of education as a part time lecturer at Northeastern Universtity. Outisde of work he’s an avid runner and can be found on the weekends coaching and cheering his two daughters on the soccer field.
