BBBSEM Guidelines on Social Distancing

We want to continue to share our appreciation for your commitment and understanding as we respond to the evolving COVID-19 virus and restrictions that come with ensuring we stay safe and healthy.

The leadership team at Big Brothers Big Sisters is listening closely to local and state experts, reviewing local guidelines to limit the spread of COVID-19, and we find ourselves making the challenging decision to maintain our current safety guidelines of restricting Big and Little outings to outdoors only, in spaces that can allow a minimum of 6 feet distance and wearing a mask at all times. As we look ahead to colder months and unpredictable weather, there will be times that spending time outdoors is not possible. Our goal is to work together with you to provide structure and support to continue to engage in meaningful mentoring activities and stay connected virtually. We truly believe in the power of connection, whether that is on a socially distanced walk or over a FaceTime call and thank each of you for making the commitment to stay engaged, connected and safe in the challenging months ahead of us.

In addition to the guidelines set forth by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts – we expect that our matches also adhere to the state and federal mandated guidelines. If your match is not ready or is unable to accommodate our safety guidelines and measures, we thank you for continuing to meet virtually and for staying connected during this difficult time. From all of us here at BBBSEM, we are inspired and appreciative of all of our matches!

20 Minute Mentoring Activity  

Title: Cultural Around-the-World Holiday Trip
Who says we can’t travel during COVID? Yes, we can!!
When we travel, we learn so much about new places, new cultures and traditions. This holiday season, let’s expand our cultural horizons and discover some holidays that are celebrated around the world, but not in the US!
Alright, all those aboard, put on your “seatbelt” and don’t forget to pack those exploration hats.

Materials: All we need is Curiosity and Google.
Directions:
1. Big and Little choose 3 countries in the world that neither of you have been to or know much about.
2. For each country, pick one holiday that is unique to the country and that is not celebrated in the US.
3. For each holiday, explore why it is celebrated, when it is celebrated and what’s one tradition that goes along with the holiday (For example-  eating Turkey during Thanksgiving or putting up a tree during Christmas).
*Feel free to make adaptations to accommodate your little’s age and abilities.

Reflection Questions: 
1. How did your match decide on the three countries and holidays?
2. Did your decision-making process teach you something about each other?
3. Which one was your favorite holiday tradition and why?
4. If you could travel to one of those countries, which one would you pick?
5. Are there any holidays that you and your Big/Little celebrate differently?

Match Highlight or Feel Good Story! 

Little Brother, Jordan and Big Brother, Alberto have been matched for four years and nothing has gotten in their way to keep their friendship going. Jordan and Alberto usually meet twice a month and text each other between visits. They used to bowl and go to Red Sox games, and since COVID, that has switched to basketball and pizza outdoors. Not only do they share similar interests, but are also on the same wavelength about the match. Jordan is glad to have someone to talk to and Alberto feels very lucky to have the opportunity to be part of Jordan’s life. In their words, they are “friends forever.”

Actividad de Mentoría de 20 minutos! 

Título: Viaje de Fiestas Culturales Alrededor del Mundo

¿Quién dice que no se puede viajar durante COVID? ¡Sí podemos!
Cuando viajamos, aprendemos tanto acerca de nuevos lugares, culturas y tradiciones. En esta temporada de fiestas, tomemos el tiempo para expandir nuestros horizontes culturales y descubrir algunos días festivos celebrados alrededor del mundo, no solo en los Estados Unidos.
¡Muy bien, todos a bordo, pónganse los cinturones y no se les olvide empacar sus gorros de exploración!

Materiales: Lo único que necesitamos es la Curiosidad y Google.

Direcciones: 
1. Big y Little deben escoger 3 países los cuales no han visitado y tampoco conocen mucho.
2. Por cada país, escoja un día festivo que sea único en ese país y que no se celebra en Estados Unidos.
3. Por cada día festivo, exploren por que se celebra, cuando se celebra y una tradición que forme parte del día (por ejemplo: comer pavo durante Thanksgiving o decorar un árbol para la navidad).

* Siéntase libre de hacer adaptaciones para acomodar la edad y las habilidades de su pequeño.

Amistad De Esta Semana:
Little Brother, Jordan, y Big Brother, Alberto, han sido amigos por cuatro años y ningún obstáculo les ha prevenido continuar su amistad. Jordan y Alberto normalmente se reúnen dos veces por mes y se mantienen en contacto por mensaje de texto entre cada visita. Antes les gustaba jugar boliche e ir a partidos de los Red Sox y desde que empezó COVID han cambiado sus planes y ahora juegan baloncesto y comen pizza afuera. No solo comparten intereses similares, pero también se sienten de manera similar el uno por el otro. Jordan está agradecido de tener alguien con quien hablar y Alberto se siente afortunado de tener la oportunidad de ser parte de la vida de Jordan. En sus propias palabras, son “amigas para siempre.”
