BBBSEM Guidelines on Social Distancing

How is it already mid-July? We hope that all of you are having a good summer thus far! We’re excited for our matches that have resumed meeting in-person. Please make sure to stay up to date with our Safety Guidelines for in-person meetings! As a friendly reminder, matches can resume in-person outings again as of July 1, as long as these safety measures are followed. In addition to the guidelines set forth by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts – we expect that our matches also adhere to the state and federal mandated guidelines. Make sure to talk to your Match Advocate, via text, email, or phone, prior to your outing to let them know your plans! If your match is not ready or is unable to accommodate our safety guidelines and measures, please continue to meet virtually and touch base with your match advocate to develop a plan that aligns with your comfortability and circumstance. We look forward to continuing to support our matches and thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to figure out this new normal together!

20 Minute Mentoring Activity

Title: Celebration Creation!

We all need something to be excited about right now. So, create your own holiday as a reason to celebrate! You can do this activity virtually or in-person as one outing and then have your actual celebration as a second outing in the future. This activity aligns with the 6C’s of Connection, Curiosity, Caring, and Emotional Competence.

Materials: A vivid imagination.

Directions:

1. Take turns sharing what holidays, parties, and traditions are important to you and what your family does to celebrate.
   1. Do you eat certain foods?
   2. Do you decorate your house?
   3. Do you sing songs or say blessings?
   4. What colors do you associate with the celebration?
   5. What feelings come to mind when you talk about these celebrations?
   6. Why is the celebration on a particular day or at a specific time of year?
2. Pick something that has been important in your match – it could be something like a favorite activity you go back to over and over, a joke you couldn’t stop laughing about, or an important conversation you had that solidified your friendship. This is now the core of your own personal Match holiday!
3. Pick a name for your holiday – it can be something simple like “Sam & Joey’s Holiday” or something only your match will understand, like “Sparkling Squiggle Day.
4. Pick a date for your holiday – it could be an important date like your Match Anniversary or a random day of the year.
5. Now, create answers to everything in step one using your brand new holiday!

*Feel free to make adaptations to accommodate your little’s age and abilities. Reflection Questions:

1. What did you learn about your Big/Little’s family?

2. What surprised you about your Big/Little’s celebrations?

3. How did reflecting on the special moments of your friendship make you feel?

4. Why do you think it’s important to celebrate or honor traditions and big moments in your life?

Match Highlight: Ellie & Lilly! 

Big Sister Ellie and Little Sister Lilly have been a rockstar match since they met last summer! They have weathered the challenges of COVID like pros with Facetime and texting. Then they jumped right back into building Curiosity when they had their first in-person outing of the summer this weekend! They explored Lilly’s neighborhood, checked out a waterfall, and made goop in Lilly’s yard that she could keep when the outing was over. We’re so excited to see what adventures this match thinks of next!

Todos necesitamos algo por lo que estar emocionados en este momento. ¡Así que crea tus propias celebraciones como motivo para celebrar! Puede realizar esta actividad virtualmente o en persona como una salida y luego tener su celebración real como una segunda salida en el futuro.
