BBBSEM Guidelines on Social Distancing

Thank you for your support and understanding as we responded to COVID-19 and adapted to online and outdoor socially distanced mentoring. Our community of Bigs and families have responded brilliantly, finding unique and powerful ways to stay bonded when this seemed near impossible! We would like to remind everyone that Community-Based matches who are comfortable meeting in-person should continue to meet outdoors in socially distant spaces only. If your match is not ready or is unable to accommodate our safety guidelines and measures, we thank you for continuing to meet virtually and for staying connected during this difficult time. Site-Based matches should continue connect online only and are not permitted to meet in-person.

For a full explanation of our current guidelines please see the BBBSEM Guidelines for Social Distancing (effective August 21st) on our website. In addition to the guidelines set forth by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts – we expect that our matches also adhere to the state and federal mandated guidelines. We understand that it may be tempting at times to escape the cold weather and seek indoor activities. We hear you, and understand that outings outdoors will be harder as the fall progresses. Safety is our number one priority and CDC COVID-19 recommendations indicate that the risk to our match participants is exponentially higher during indoor outings.

Looking ahead, we are continuing to closely monitor COVID-19 trends in Massachusetts as well as state and CDC recommendations.  We will be back in touch with any updates on our guidelines in November. In the meantime, we encourage you to get outside, enjoy the fall weather together and continue practicing periodic virtual meetings in preparation for a possible return to online mentoring this winter.

20 Minute Mentoring Activity  

Escape Hogwarts: Digital Escape Room

The goal is to work through the challenging questions together and explore a new environment!  While working on your escape you will also be working on Curiosity!

Definition: A love of learning; the belief that one’s intelligence can improve with practice and effort; usually exhibited when trying new things or seeking a deeper understanding of topics of interests.

Materials: Notebook and Pencil to jot down any clues.
(Optional) Dress as a character from Hogwarts/Harry Potter

Directions:

1. Big will need to screen share with Little

Match Highlight: Matt and Juliyan

Matt and Juliyan were matched in one of our site-based programs shortly before schools closed in March. The beginning of the friendship had some bumps as they had to shift to virtual from meeting during Juliyan’s lunch/recess break at school. Throughout the spring and summer Matt and Juliyan were able to connect virtually on a consistent basis. Recently Juliyan’s mom sent Matt a text sharing some special news. Mom had suggested that Juliyan write his feelings down in a notebook and share them with someone he trusts. Later she asked Juliyan who do you trust? Juliyan quickly responded with Matt! Matt shared how privileged he felt and how important earning Juliyan’s trust from the beginning of the friendship was!

BBBSEM Civic Engagement Challenge:

Your voice matters! Are you CIVICALLY ENGAGED? Election Day is here and we want to hear from our matches: Why do you think it’s important to be civically engaged? This challenge isn’t just for our Littles, we also want our Bigs to get involved and share why being civically engaged is important. With permission from everyone involved — matches that participate may be highlighted on our social media channels for match shout outs! Every match that participates and submits for this challenge will be entered into a raffle at the end of the month for a chance to win prizes and gift cards!!! Winning matches will be announced the first week of December and prizes will be sent to the Little’s home! See below for the guidelines and instructions on how to participate! If you have questions about how to explore conversations about civic engagement in your match, please reach out to your match advocate!

Has your match been meeting 2+ times a month? Over the past few months we’ve had to get creative with different ways to stay connected with friends, family, and with each other. During COVID-19, we have been SO impressed by our matches and your ability to navigate challenges and barriers as you continue to remain connected during this challenging time! Whether you’re connecting virtually or in-person for socially distanced outings — YOU’RE ALL SUPERHEROES! Nuestra comunidad de Bigs y sus familias han respondido de manera brillante, encontrando formas únicas y poderosas de mantenerse unidos cuando esto parecía casi imposible. Nos gustaría recordarles a todos que las amistades basadas en la comunidad que se sienten cómodos reuniéndose en persona deben continuar reuniéndose al aire libre solo en espacios socialmente distantes. Si su amistad no está lista o no puede adaptarse a nuestras pautas y medidas de seguridad, le agradecemos por continuar reuniéndose virtualmente y por mantenerse conectado durante este momento difícil. Las amistades basadas en el sitio escolar deben continuar conectándose solo en línea y no se les permite reunirse en persona.

Amistad De Esta Semana: Matt y Juliyan

Matt y Juliyan fueron emparejados en uno de nuestros programas de sitio poco antes de que las escuelas cerraran en marzo. El comienzo de la amistad tuvo algunos baches, ya que tuvieron que pasar a ser virtual después de reunirse algunas veces durante el receso / almuerzo de Juliyan en la escuela. Durante la primavera y el verano, Matt y Juliyan pudieron conectarse virtualmente de manera constante. Recientemente, la madre de Juliyan le envió un mensaje de texto a Matt compartiendo una noticia especial. Mamá le había sugerido a Juliyan que escribiera sus sentimientos en un cuaderno y los compartiera con alguien en quien confíe.
