BBBSEM Guidelines on Social Distancing  

We are so grateful for your continue support and adherence to our safety guidelines! With the start of the school year, we will keep an eye on the numbers, Commonwealth updates, and feedback from all of you to make sure that we continue to provide clear and safe support.

Please click here to review the updates guidelines for socially distanced outings that went into effect August 21, 2020. Please make sure to stay up to date with our Safety Guidelines for in-person meetings as we continue to make updates! As a friendly reminder, matches that have resumed in-person outings again must continue to meet outdoors. In addition to the guidelines set forth by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts – we expect that our matches also adhere to the state and federal mandated guidelines. If your match is not ready or is unable to accommodate our safety guidelines and measures, we thank you for continuing to meet virtually and for staying connected during this difficult time. From all of us here at BBBSEM, we are inspired and appreciative of all of our matches!

20 Minute Mentoring Activity  

Jump into Autumn!

How silently they tumble down
And come to rest upon the ground
To lay a carpet, rich and rare,
Beneath the trees without a care,
Content to sleep, their work well done,
Colors gleaming in the sun.

Today marks the official first day of Autumn! Celebrate with your Little by sharing your favorite things about the season in a creative way by writing a poem together. Depending on the poem you and your Little write, this activity can touch on so many of our 6Cs! Working together is building Character and boosting Connection, getting creative is touching on Curiosity, and the tone of the poem could bring this activity into Caring or Emotional Competence! Any way you do this activity, your final product can be a Confidence moment for your Little!

Materials:

Your best creative brain space and maybe a piece of paper and pen/pencil.

Directions:

1.Take turns with your Little in sharing your favorite Autumn activities!

2. Talk about what makes something poetry! Should it rhyme? Does your Little know of any poems? Do they hear poetry in music?

3. Talk about rhythms and beats – you can make this more active by putting some moves to your rhythm!

4. Write an Autumn poem together! Based on your knowledge of your Little and your match, this can be a fun back and forth project, individual writings you share, or something set to a tune you can perform together!

5. If your Little is comfortable with it, we would love to see your finished poems! You can send these along to your Match Advocate.

*Feel free to make adaptations to accommodate your little’s age and abilities.

1. What similarities and differences did you notice in what you are each looking forward to this season?

2. Did this conversation spur any activity ideas or goals for the future?

3. What else could you express using poetry, lyrics, dance, or other forms of art?

Match Highlight: Mia and Valentina! 

As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we wanted to highlight one of our amazing matches that identify as Latinx! Big Sister Valentina is Chilean and Little Sister Mia’s family is Dominican. This dynamic match started off virtually, but have now had several exciting in person outings in the parks near Mia’s house. Mia is excited to celebrate their Hispanic Heritage by “visiting where each other is from” online and learning some Spanish from Valentina while they paint their nails!

• Need some help getting fidgety kids to settle down? This National Geographic article has five great tips to help kids focus.
• Corn maze season is here! Massachusetts has tons of corn mazes, so find a corn maze near you. Please check the farm’s website for their operating hours and safety guidelines before your visit. Buying tickets in advance may be required, in order to maintain social distancing.
• Marvel at over 50 outdoor sculptures on display at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, from September 20 – October 10! Take a self-guided walking tour through the park for free and enjoy art in the fresh air. Visit the Sculpture at Maudstay Facebook page for more information. 
• Watch drive-in movies for FREE on Family Nights at the Nubian Summer Drive-in every Saturday! Find more information and the movie schedule at the Nubian Summer Drive-In website.

We’re approaching the start of a new school year! This school year might not look or feel quite like the others due to COVID-19 — but that’s not stopping us from having a little bit of fun! Whether you’re going back to school in-person, learning remotely, or exploring the hybrid learning model this selfie challenge is for YOU! Both of you! This challenge isn’t just for our Littles we also want our Bigs to get involved and take a trip down memory lane as you join your little for some fun! With permission from everyone involved — matches that participate may be highlighted on our social media channels for match shout outs! Every match that participates and enters will be entered into a raffle at the end of the month for a chance to win prizes and gift cards. Winning matches will be announced the first week of October and prizes will be sent to the Little’s home. See below for the guidelines and instructions on how to enter!

¡Hoy es el primer día oficial de otoño! Celebre con su Little compartiendo sus cosas favoritas sobre la temporada de una manera creativa escribiendo un poema juntos. Dependiendo del poema que escriban tú y tu Little, ¡esta actividad puede tocar muchas de nuestras 6C! Trabajar juntos es construir el carácter e impulsar la conexión, ser creativo es tocar la curiosidad, y el tono del poema podría llevar esta actividad a la competencia emocional o cariñosa. De cualquier forma que haga esta actividad, su producto final puede ser un momento de confianza para su Little.

Materiales: Tu mejor espacio para el cerebro creativo y tal vez una hoja de papel y un bolígrafo / lápiz.

Direcciones:

1.¡Túrnense con su Little para compartir sus actividades de otoño favoritas!

2. ¡Habla sobre lo que hace que algo sea poesía! ¿Debería rimar? ¿Tu Little sabe de algún poema? ¿Escuchan poesía en la música?

3. Habla sobre ritmos y ritmos; ¡puedes hacer esto más activo poniendo algunos movimientos a tu ritmo!

4. ¡Escriban juntos un poema de otoño! Basado en su conocimiento de su Little y su amistad, este puede ser un proyecto divertido de ida y vuelta, escritos individuales que comparte o algo configurado con una melodía que pueden tocar juntos.

Amistad De Esta Semana: Mia y Valentina! 

Mientras continuamos celebrando el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, ¡queríamos destacar uno de nuestras increíbles amistades que se identifican como latinx! La Big Sister Valentina es chilena y la familia de la Little Sister Mia es dominicana. Este dinámico partido comenzó virtualmente, pero ahora ha tenido varias emocionantes salidas en persona en los parques cerca de la casa de Mia. Mia está emocionada de celebrar su herencia hispana “visitando de dónde son” en línea y aprendiendo algo de español de Valentina mientras se pintan las uñas.

• ¡La temporada de laberintos de maíz está aquí! Massachusetts tiene toneladas de laberintos de maíz, así que busque uno cerca de usted. BBBSEM Back 2 School Desafio De Selfies!    
¡Nos acercamos al comienzo de un nuevo año escolar! Es posible que este año escolar no se parezca ni se sienta como los demás debido al COVID-19, ¡pero eso no nos impide divertirnos un poco! Ya sea que vuelvas a la escuela en persona, aprendas de forma remota o explores el modelo de aprendizaje híbrido, ¡este desafío de selfies es para TI! ¡Ustedes dos! ¡Este desafío no es solo para nuestros Littles, también queremos que nuestros Bigs se involucren y hagan un viaje por el camino de los recuerdos mientras se une a su Little para divertirse!
