BBBSEM Guidelines on Social Distancing

We want to continue to share our appreciation for your commitment and understanding as we respond to the evolving COVID-19 virus and restrictions that come with ensuring we stay safe and healthy.

The leadership team at Big Brothers Big Sisters is listening closely to local and state experts, reviewing local guidelines to limit the spread of COVID-19, and we find ourselves making the challenging decision to maintain our current safety guidelines of restricting Big and Little outings to outdoors only, in spaces that can allow a minimum of 6 feet distance and wearing a mask at all times. As we look ahead to colder months and unpredictable weather, there will be times that spending time outdoors is not possible. Our goal is to work together with you to provide structure and support to continue to engage in meaningful mentoring activities and stay connected virtually. We truly believe in the power of connection, whether that is on a socially distanced walk or over a FaceTime call and thank each of you for making the commitment to stay engaged, connected and safe in the challenging months ahead of us.

In addition to the guidelines set forth by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts – we expect that our matches also adhere to the state and federal mandated guidelines. If your match is not ready or is unable to accommodate our safety guidelines and measures, we thank you for continuing to meet virtually and for staying connected during this difficult time. From all of us here at BBBSEM, we are inspired and appreciative of all of our matches!

20 Minute Mentoring Activity  

Socially Distant Activity
1. Bundle up, pack a snack, and get ready to explore some local trails and walking paths! Here are some ideas to get you started:

2. Check out the Hatch Shell Illumination Experience at the Charles River Esplanade which runs through February 21. The 15-minute visual and sound performance begins at 5pm each night and restarts every 20 minutes until 9pm.
3. Snowport is here to celebrate winter at the Seaport! You can try free, socially-distanced curling and explore the art installations throughout.

Virtual Activity: Celebrate Black History Month!
Join your Little in celebrating Black History month by learning more about how Black Americans continue to shape culture and make history every day.

1. Each of you should choose 3 living Black Americans you admire. These can be activists, athletes, actors, musicians, writers, dancers, teachers or anyone belonging to a field of interest to you and your Little. Once you have your list, spend a few minutes learning and teaching! Share a favorite song, music video, speech, clip, etc.
Reflection: Share with each other why you chose the individuals that you did and what you admire about each of them. What is something new you learned about each of your choices? Think of someone in your life you can share your learnings with to keep the conversation going about Black excellence and culture.

2. Looking to enjoy the beauty of winter from the warmth of your own home? Go on an adventure exploring ice castles around the country! You can start by learning how they are built, and then take a tour of ice castles in Minnesota, Colorado, or Utah! Check out this list of virtual winter field trip ideas for more adventures!

3. Explore your artistic curiosity by joining MassArt Art Museum for a free collage workshop on February 11 at 6:30pm. All ages welcome! Register here.

4. The USS Constitution Museum is hosting a variety of virtual activities for Lego fans from February 13-21 during their Virtual Lego Maritime Festival. Check out the calendar of events here.

5. For fans of Marvel and Disney, Kahoot now has a variety of trivia games for all ages around science, math, and more! Browse through the Marvel and Disney trivia to test out your knowledge together!

Match Highlight or Feel Good Story! 
Big Stephen and Little TJ met each other virtually in May 2020 before transitioning to in person outings. In order to help TJ build his confidence and be more active, Stephen created the Boston Playground Championship Challenge which involved timing TJ as he raced through play structures around the city. After completing all of the challenges, TJ and Stephen celebrated with an awards ceremony that included cupcakes, a trophy, and an official certificate. TJ is excited to now hold the title of Boston Playground Champion! Now that the challenge is complete, Stephen and TJ are looking forward to remaining active together as TJ learns how to ride a bike!

1. For the first time in 22 years, Big Night (our largest annual fundraiser) will be held virtually, allowing us to extend a complimentary invite to our entire community! We will be joined by Governor (and former Big) Charlie Baker to honor all of our Littles and the incredible achievements that have emerged during such an extraordinary year. Register here to join us for Big Night on Thursday, February 25 at 5:30pm.

2. Let’s Get Ready continues to offer free, fully virtual SAT prep, college admissions supports, and post-enrollment mentorship for high school students! Sign up for Let’s Get Ready now.

3. Boston-area 15 to 18 year olds are invited to apply for the Historias de Boston Youth Employment Program, where they will learn video and audio production tools and techniques with an emphasis on digital storytelling. Submit your application by February 28!

Amistad De Esta Semana:

¡Big Stephen y Little TJ se conocieron virtualmente en mayo del 2020 antes de hacer la transición a las salidas en persona. Para ayudar a TJ a desarrollar su confianza y ser más activo, Stephen creó el Campeonato de Desafíos de Parques de Boston que incluía cronometrar a TJ mientras corría a través de las estructuras de juego alrededor de la ciudad. Después de completar todos los desafíos, TJ y Stephen celebraron con una ceremonia de premios que incluyó cupcakes, un trofeo y un certificado oficial. ¡TJ está emocionada de tener ahora el título de Campeón de Parques de Boston! Ahora que el desafío ha acabado, Stephen y TJ esperan mantenerse activos juntos mientras TJ aprende a andar en bicicleta.
